Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the ability to question certain decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
