Russia Persistently Targeting UK Satellites, Space Command Head Reports

Moscow is trying to disrupt UK military satellites frequently, as stated by the leader of the UK Space Command.

Major General Paul Tedman revealed that Russian forces were consistently attempting to interfere with British defense operations “weekly” and were closely monitoring the country’s space assets.

“We’re seeing our satellites facing interference by Russian forces on a reasonably persistent basis,” he stated.

The UK operates about six dedicated military satellites for communications and surveillance, which the general noted were outfitted with anti-interference systems.

He further stated: “They possess payloads onboard that can see our satellites and are trying to collect data from them.”

Global Space Threats

The danger of orbital disruption is not limited to the United Kingdom. In September, the German defense minister, the German official, revealed that Russia had been tracking Intelsat space systems operated by the German military.

“They can jam, disable, control or physically damage space assets,” he stated at a space conference in Berlin.

Cooperative Response

Reacting to growing international tensions, the United Kingdom and United States last month executed their first coordinated satellite manoeuvre in orbit, in what military leaders hailed as a significant advancement in allied cooperation.

Between 4 and 12 September, a American space asset was repositioned in orbit to examine a British space system and confirm it was functioning properly. The test was conducted under Operation Olympic Defender, a combined defense program designed to enhancing space protection and resilience.

“Expertly executed with US Space Command, I could not be more pleased or impressed of the quick advancement we are achieving with our allies,” the general commented.

Escalating Friction

The escalation in space comes as tensions with Russia persistently increase.

The UK foreign secretary, Yvette Cooper, warned last week that the UK was prepared to respond after the American leader, Donald Trump, openly encouraged Nato allies to intercept encroaching Russian planes.

In a speech to the United Nations in last month, Cooper condemned Russia's “provocative and reckless” violations of Nato airspace in recent weeks, including incidents over Baltic nations, Poland and Romania.
