Individuals Stopping Slimming Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users purchasing such drugs must be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Interest

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural support.
