Hoosier State Female Fatally Shot After Arriving at Wrong Home Address for Cleaning Duties

Law enforcement officials in the state are weighing possible criminal charges against a homeowner who reportedly fatally shot a female after she accidentally arrived to the incorrect address where she believed scheduled to clean a home.

Police discovered Maria Florinda Rios Perez De Velasquez, aged 32, deceased just before 7am on the front porch of a home in Whitestown, a community of about 10,000 residents near Indianapolis.

She belonged to a cleaning crew that had gone to the wrong address, police stated in an official release.

Officials did not publicly identified the person who fired, but police submitted their findings from the probe to the Boone County prosecutor, the county prosecutor, on Friday.

The incident will focus on Indiana’s “castle doctrine” laws, which allow a person to use deadly force to stop what they reasonably believe is an illegal entry into their dwelling.

However the shooting has stunned the community. The victim’s spouse, Mauricio Velazquez, stated to local media that he was standing with her at the home’s entrance but didn’t realize she had been hit until she fell into his arms, bleeding. On a fundraising page, her sibling mentioned that she was a mother of four.

A majority of US states have similar laws to Indiana on the books, as reported by the national legislative research group.

In similar cases elsewhere, prosecutors have filed criminal charges against individuals who opened fire outside their residences, including a guilty plea by an 86-year-old man who shot a Black teenager when the teen approached his home accidentally. In New York, a man was convicted of homicide for killing a woman inside a car who drove down his driveway in error.

This tragic event underscores ongoing debates surrounding stand-your-ground statutes and their application in real-life scenarios.
