Female Victim Stabbed in Birmingham Bus Stop Assault Succumbs to Injuries
The female victim who was stabbed in the neck during a random assault at a bus stop in Birmingham has passed away, police have confirmed.
The deceased woman, who was 34, was targeted in Smallbrook Queensway, just outside the Bullring shopping centre, shortly before 21:00 GMT on Friday, according to police statements.
The suspect, twenty-one, appeared before Birmingham Magistrates Court Monday morning, charged over the attack.
Originally charged of attempted murder but following the victim's passing charges were upgraded to murder.
Police Response
The force said police personnel will remain in the downtown area through Monday providing public assurance, and investigators were supporting the victim's relatives.
Detectives are appealing any eyewitnesses who may have seen the accused, identified as British citizen of Black ethnicity, and is believed to have been wearing an all-grey tracksuit, dark headwear, trainers and rucksack.
Attack Site Details
The stabbing happened near the Bullring shopping centre, across from the main entrance to Birmingham New Street station.
Police said they classified it as a random violent act with investigators stating efforts continue to determine why it happened.
Witness Accounts
Shalini Doal, employed in the vicinity, described the emergency response when she finished her work period around 10 PM Friday night.
She characterized the location as extremely disorderly, adding that some of her colleagues heard a commotion around 9 PM.
"Many my colleagues take public transport, ride the tramline... our safety is at risk fundamentally, here in the city centre."
Ashley Birks, 25, resident of Stoke, said he came the city fairly regularly visiting his partner resident there, expressing concern about what had happened.
"It causes concern for my girlfriend," he said.
"She doesn't drive and works at major concert locations... and to think something completely unprovoked [happened], understandably, it's horrible."
