While the Rafah crossing from Egypt opens soon, relief agencies confront substantial difficulties distributing assistance to the northern region, the region worst hit by food shortages, according to experts.
Infrastructure Issues
Major routes are almost blocked due to extensive devastation across the devastated territory – or remain controlled by security personnel. Any transport that breaks down is probably will be quickly plundered.
The main entry point, the key gateway to the north, damaged by 24 months of war, has been closed for multiple weeks, and authorities have notified aid groups in Gaza that there are no short-term arrangements to open the entry location, per reports from aid workers.
Damage in Northern Gaza
Gaza City was the target of a large-scale military operation launched in August that was still under way when the temporary truce was finalized recently.
Damage in the north has been extensive, with complete communities including urban centers and neighboring towns in destroyed as well as many of the outlying areas of the main city.
"Any activation of a crossing into Gaza is positive, but we need to guarantee we can access populations where they are," said an experienced official from an international NGO.
Aid Situation
Observers said many of the approximately 300,000 people who have come back to the northern region from the crowded shelter regions where they had been living during the military operations were now "living" among the destruction of their homes, often without any shelter and with limited nutrition or hydration.
A spokesperson from a humanitarian body said the damage in northern Gaza was "shocking".
"It is neighborhood after neighborhood, building after building ... there is massive desperation for water. It's pretty harrowing. We need all the crossings operational," the official, who was in Gaza City earlier this week, stated.
Insufficient Access
An organization head based in the urban center said the requirements in what used to be the region's thriving business and community focal point were "immense".
"There is positive expectation and hope but there needs to be immediate enhancement on the border points. There has been no substantial progress on the reality yet," the official said.
"There remains a insufficient volume of support [and] we are now commencing to grasp the extent of damage. So many streets are completely covered in debris ... there is almost no home that is secure. There is damage and unexploded bombs across the region."
Current Developments
On Saturday, humanitarian organizations said modest volumes of necessary propane reached Gaza for the first time in multiple months, along with deliveries of flour, grains and produce. The new supplies sent market costs tumbling.
Within a central community, a local resident said there had been some improvement since the peace agreement.
"Stores are containing food, fresh goods, and fresh fruit, although the rates are remaining elevated and not attainable for the entire population," the resident stated.
Cold Season Needs
"The primary requirements currently, specifically due to the approach of the cold season, are to have a tent to keep us safe from the low temperatures and winter clothes because the stores do not have sufficient clothing for us or, if they can be found, they are scarce and prohibitively costly."
Nine UN-supported bakeries in mid and southern regions have begun working again since the peace agreement.
Support Distribution
Vehicles were reported to have passed via the border access point through Israeli territory to Gaza during the week, though specific quantities were unknown.
The nation's media outlet stated that the day's humanitarian shipments would include nutritional supplies, treatment resources, energy sources, propane and equipment to repair crucial facilities.
"Assistance resources continues to enter the Gaza territory through the border access point and other crossings after safety verification," an Israeli security official stated.
Distribution Challenges
But monitoring the quantity of vehicles could be deceptive, warned an expert from an international NGO. "It's crucial to understand the contents of the trucks and their loading status for it to be a truly significant indicator," the representative said.
Private companies are transporting fleets of vehicles loaded with sweets, carbonated beverages and light food, which have minimal health benefits, while urgent medical support for minors or others who have been without proper sustenance for multiple years are limited.
Treatment Conditions
Throughout the main city, only seven nutritional outpatient clinics are functioning, compared with 45 in earlier this year.
Various groups have significant funding worth of supplies stored in the region pending distribution. An international organization supporting local residents across the territory for a long time has three months' worth of food for all residents in place to be delivered.
"We have the resources, the instruments and the skills ... we only require the entry," said one aid worker, just returning from Gaza.
Political Aspects
A diplomatic framework outlines that "full" assistance should be delivered to Gaza and be provided through international organizations and humanitarian networks, without interference from any military groups or government forces.
This likely prohibits the debated authority-approved aid group which commenced activities in spring, leading to disorderly situations and numerous casualties as numerous individuals assembled around its assistance centers.
