Caelan Doris Makes Ireland Squad While McCarthy Misses Out
Newly reappointed head coach Andy Farrell has named skipper Caelan Doris in his Irish squad for the autumn matches, however lock McCarthy is absent.
The captain, who has not played since undergoing a shoulder operation in the start of May, recently returned to provincial training, but it remains unclear if he will be ready to face the All Blacks in the US on 1 November.
Lock Joe McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot injury he sustained during the opening Lions match against Australia in the summer.
Ulster forward Izuchukwu and southern province winger Calvin Nash also miss out because of fitness concerns, and number 15 Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing hip surgery after the summer tour.
Dublin province prop Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the sole new member in the 34-player group, but Irish rugby authorities states uncapped provincial pair Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped Connacht winger Shayne Bolton will head to the US as "backup".
Following facing the New Zealand at the Chicago stadium in a rematch of their previous encounter, Ireland host Japan, Australia and world champions South Africa in the Irish capital.
"There's an exciting look to the squad and it's a chance for the more experienced members and for the newcomers on the summer tour to the Lelos and the Lobos," said Farrell, back to national team duties after a break to coach the Lions tour to Australia.
In a mostly experienced selection, the Dublin club's Prendergast and the southern club's Jack Crowley will once again compete for the first-choice number 10 spot. The number 10 jersey is still available, with the two players set to play against each other for the first time in the upcoming URC game at Croke Park.
Ciaran Frawley is the third number 10 selected with Farrell opting against calling up Leinster's Byrne.
At number 9, the Ireland boss has selected Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who led the national side to the summer Test victories over Georgia and the Lobos. Additionally, there is a recall for the western province's Caolin Blade, who is preferred to teammate Murphy.
Robbie Henshaw, Aki, Garry Ringrose and McCloskey represent an veteran cohort of centre choices. Jamie Osborne is a further choice in the centres, though the youngster is additionally a frontrunner to cover for Keenan at number 15.
Wingers Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are included. O'Brien shone on his first Ireland outings over the summer with two tries apiece in the wins over the Lelos and Portugal.
McCarthy is the sole new name in the Irish forwards. The loose-head prop has started a couple of Leinster's URC United Rugby Championship games so far and featured in the second string's loss by the English in Bristol previously.
McCarthy was selected in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not earn a international appearance.
Southern province lock Ahern, who received his first two caps in those matches, is kept in the squad, and experienced Northern province second row Henderson returns after sitting out the summer tour.
Jack Conan, who started each of the Lions Tests during the tour, is poised to deputise for the captain if the captain does not regain full fitness soon enough to play New Zealand.
The Ireland squad will assemble in Dublin on the start of the week before flying to Chicago on Tuesday.
